Is it common sense that makes our leaders uneasy?

The Hard Truth Of Immigration
Robert J. Samuelson, Newsweek Business Columnist

"Americans rightly glorify our heritage of absorbing immigrants. Over time, they move into the economic, political and social mainstream; over time, they become American rather than whatever they were—even though immigrants themselves constantly refashion the American identity. But no society has a boundless capacity to accept newcomers, especially when many are poor and unskilled."
It is becoming clearer by the day that Mark Krikorian's idea about creating an atmosphere in which illegals decide to self deport is the way to go. That is, do it via the gradual ratcheting up of enforcement activities against those who employ illlegal aliens coupled with stronger border measures. This gets rid of the "it will be too shocking to our economy if we simply deport them all at once" argument; employers are addicted to cheap labor like smokers crave nicotine. I've got no qualms about letting them down gradually while severely punishing the most flagrant lawbreaking bigwigs first, and hardest.

The one thing that the folks at CIS (Krikorian's group) leave out is that Mexico is an economic cesspool being run by kleptocrats, so anything we do that leaves the corrupt leadership situation south of the border unaddressed will lead to some other crisis involving masses of poor, unskilled potential dependents just beyond our doorstep. There has to be a simultaneous policy that deals with Mexico's shortcomings, regardless of the solution we impose.

Of course, there is a part of me that hopes Vic Fox loses the election to a leftist who aligns with Hugo Chavez. If you want to see a border sealed - and fast - just put another Fidel Castro with cash on our border while the GOP holds Congress and the Executive.
